Obsolete Friends

Obsolete Friends is a story focused semi-horror RPG Maker game where you play as Luna, a Moon Guardian bunny, in their everyday routine of helping out their neighbors. Help them bring kindness and hope in a world that has been consumed by darkness, get to know your strange but friendly neighbors and be the best friend you can be! Just try to not think about what's missing...

Gameplay

Obsolete Friends appears to be a social simulation sort of game, but it’s NOT really. The game is truly focused on a linear story. Talking to characters is its most important core, so if you’re looking for a more gameplay-focused game this is not that kind of game.

Length

The game includes multiple optional tasks, so it could be a shorter or longer experience depending on your playthrough. It is also a dialogue heavy game, so if you read all the dialogue out loud it will take the double amount to finish it.

But as an example, on my own silent test playthroughs, the game takes about 3+ hours or 4 hours.

Music

The game includes free-to-use music made by many talented people. None of the music belongs or is created by me. All artists are credited in the credits at the end.

Language

The only language available is English. 

English is not my first language, while I believe to have a good level, it might be noticeable sometimes that this was written by someone whose first language isn't English.

While the game has been playtested multiple times, it's always possible there can be a couple of typos, as I am only one person (+ a friend of mine who was my playtester) working on this game. Don't be shy to let me know about any typo or error though.

Visual warnings

-A scene in a theater plays a movie that has VHS-like overlay with flickering white lines/flashing lights.

-Interacting with the game with your mouse creates flashing boxes when you click on a character, object or tile. It's adviced to play with your keyboard or controller if you wish to avoid this.

-When navigating through the menu or choosing a dialogue, there is a flickering light that highlights which text you are currently positioned in. Should not cause too much trouble, but a warning just in case doesn't hurt.

-There is an issue with some sprite animations and text box sprites, as they flicker for a second on occasions.

-There is a running option, so it can show some fast movements on the screen. 

-A shakey camera effect is applied in some scenes.

-Blood and injuries (on eyes, face, hands and chest)

-Suicide ideation for major characters, implied suicide of background character

-Internalized ableism and targeted ableism towards cluster B personality disorders

-Discussions of depression

-Transphobia (implied for one character and kept very brief on an in-universe online forum)

-Implied and discussed abuse by parents

-Implied child neglect

-Organs

Longer details as to how these themes are presented in the story are available in the game.  You are also able to skip dialogue and fast forward scenes if you hold down the (X) key on your keyboard or hold left click on your mouse.

Controls

-For keyboard: 

Move around with arrows.

“Z” or “Enter” to interact with objects or characters. 

“X” to open your menu and to fastforward conversations and scenes.

-For mouse:

Click left to interact with objects or characters. Holding left allows you to fastforward conversations and scenes.

Click right to open your menu.

-The game also works with controllers! 

RELEASE

The full game will come out on May 29th, for only 2$. If you are not able to play it, a full playthrough with no commentary will be available on this channel the same day.
